This book contains book one and two of a series. I rather liked the first book, but was a bit disappointed in the second. Because the first book concentrated on introducing the characters and developing the abilities of the Heroine, it was intriguing. The second book, however, fell flat for me. I assumed that the Heroine, a teen named Mara, would develop some smarts and a better personality in book two as she matured into her abilities. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The second book simply turned into a Zombie Apocalypse.I like the way the plot is progressing, but I don't care much for how that is being accomplished. And Mara has to step up if she's going to save the World (Worlds). I'm not sure if I'll continue the series or not, because I can't connect with the main character. She needs to be more appealing. It's pretty sad when you like the bad guys more than the Heroine.

I couldn't put it down! I got books 1 and 2 for free. Normally, I'm not really into y.a. books. But wow! It's a sit up and take notice type of book. The endings are not cliffhanger's per second, but appetite wetters. They lead you to the next in the series. Read them in order to better understand them. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!
Good series but the whining "I can't" or "don't want to do this" gets a little tiring. I wish there was more acceptance from Mara on what Ping has been trying to teach her. I did enjoy the concepts of different realms and will probably continue with the series.
Alternate realities are not new, but throw some metaphysics into the mix and you have the recipe for an intriguing tale. The author has a real page turner here. If you want great entertainment give this author a try. Now on to the next adventure in this series.
Wow, what an intense ride! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I just loved all the characters. Especially Sam. I hope he has more involvement in the next book. The alternate realities was unique and presented well in the story. Looking forward to more fun with the next book.
The author is highly intelligent, educated, and creative. I generally sail through books because I read extremely fast. This, however, was a wholly different experience. (I'd recommend you read book one first. And be ready for some philosophy thrown in with your sci fi.). Stop every so often and let the ideas sink in. This isn't a book to blow through sitting in the airport.
Really nice. Do not, however, do one of those marathon reads. Meander along and enjoy some interesting ideas, plot, and characters.
I like the plot but Mara is ridiculous. She stays in denial, even after she proves her abilities. to herself. Then when she starts thinking she really can do things, she starts blinking. Really? That just does, not, make, sense.
Staying in denial does not make her morally responsible. Knowing how and when to use them determines her morals.
Adult issues for YA main characters, Harry Potter level violence, parent issues, abuse.
While the main characters may be young adults, I don't see this as a young adult book for reasons stated above. This is an action adventure/save the universe/coming of age type story where YA are forced to kill in self defense, and save the universe. This is in direct contrast to "normal teenage problems " of other characters ( like feeling that your friends are not spending enough time with you) which result in universe- changing consequences. The contrast between Mara and Abby's "problems" show Abby to be somewhat petty and childish in her thinking which leaves her open to attack and disastrous results. All this from a lack of communication between friends, and the failure to do better research of the situation- culture before acting.
Engaging story with good world -building and characters.
I want to read the rest of the series if it is available with tts for android included.
